Summary:

Surgical Assistants assist physicians in surgery and may perform specific significant surgical tasks under “professional supervision”. (Significant surgical tasks include, but are not limited to: opening and closing surgical sites, placing trocars, tourniquet, exposure of the surgical site, harvesting grafts, dissecting tissue, removing tissue, implanting devices, altering tissues, assisting in maintaining hemostasis, equipment and supplies, including monopolar, bipolar, harmonic scalpel, ultrasonic, medications, sponges, clamping, ligating, and cutting tissue, closing all wound layers (fascia, subcutaneous, and skin), inserting drainage tubes and selecting and applying wound dressing ).
