PhD Research Fellow in transport mode detection with location privacy

University of Oslo – IFI (Informatics Department) / PT (Programming Technology), Blindern, Oslo.

Duration: 3 years, with possible extension up to 4 years. Start date: no later than October 1, 2026. Salary range: NOK 550,800 – 595,000.

Project description

Automatic human activity detection (HAR) and transport‑mode detection (TMD) are essential for urban planning, public transport systems, mobile navigation, healthcare and entertainment. This PhD project aims to develop a generalisable, GPS‑free system that can accurately detect transport modes while preserving users’ location privacy.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement and evaluate machine‑learning models for TMD that are robust to geographical location, user variation, smartphone type, and device placement.
